Your Insight Abroad Placement with our Partner Programs – The framework of the experience
Your work as a participant is project-based and requires no prior experience - just a desire to pitch-in and help the community. No matter what your prior experience or placement, both the local people and our staff look forward to your arrival.
As a participant, you'll get a chance to see these invaluable services up close, and to participate in a meaningful way. And in doing so, you'll be involved in areas of work that are at the very core of this country's social system. You'll have the opportunity to experience first-hand how politics can shape a society, and in just one week, you'll gain an insider's perspective of this community - one that you could never plan on accessing in your ordinary travels.
While the city of
Salvador is rich in beauty, it's also home to many shantytowns, or 'favelas'. In the favelas, Partner organizations are working to provide extra education and health care to the residents. As a participant, you'll be invited by the community into their neighborhoods to discuss and share in community concerns - and work side-by-side with local people to create solutions that matter. As part of this experience, you'll get the incredible opportunity to work with the local children, supplying some of their most basic needs. Participants are often surprised to discover that they receive much more from their daily interactions than they actually end up giving.
In fact, our participants have become so popular in many neighborhoods that children from other neighborhoods often make a trip just to visit with them!
Perspectives Programming
Brazilians are so energetic and enthusiastic, it's almost impossible not to soak up their culture and customs. But just to make sure every participant gets the chance to really get involved, we offer Perspectives Programming - a number of activities each afternoon that are meaningful and exciting. These activities are designed to help immerse you into the community in just a matter of days. They include an in-depth orientation to the program and local customs, plus exciting cultural excursions, such as an insider's tour of the community you will be a part of. You'll create some Brazilian flavor of your own in a local cooking class, and get a chance to dance the afternoon away with a samba or Capoeira lesson. We also host various guest speakers who are local experts on a variety of topics including Candomblé, Brazilian politics and so much more.
Free Time
Free time is time for your own personal adventures, and is available some afternoons and most evenings. This time is yours to explore the town, to shop, or to do whatever helps you get to know the community and people in your own way. You'll find there is plenty to do in
Salvador , including taking part in free music workshops in Pelourinho, enjoying extra Capoeira lessons, visiting galleries and museums in the city, or heading to the beautiful beach. If you need some tips on where to go and what to see, the local staff is always on hand to give you some exciting suggestions.
