The Uakari Lodge was designed for minimum environmental impact and is located inside the largest existing block of protected Amazonian rainforest. By visiting Uakari Lodge you are contributing directly to the conservation project of the Mamiraua Institute and thereby helping to sustain the biodiversity of the Amazon rainforest. The lodge’s 5 bungalows and dining area are connected by a floating walkway, allowing guests complete privacy, peace and relaxation. The lodge has a restaurant where almost everything is prepared from local Amazon produce. You will experience flavors you’ve never tasted before of rare fruits and delicious fish. Sometimes, the Lodge restaurant will even serve fresh fish caught by the guests themselves. The Uakari floating Lodge offers many amenities within its simple design:
- Restaurant
- Bar
- Library
- Video
- Games
- Conference room
- Small Medical Dispensary
The location of the floating lodge at a bend in the river is ideal for observing wildlife without leaving the premises. Don’t miss the amazing experience of a boat trip to the Lake Mamiraua where you will see pink dolphins, black caimans by night and hundreds of birds and monkeys.
The guided activities that the Uakari Lodge offers include:
- Daily Walks - every morning after breakfast guests have the opportunity to choose one of the jungle trails in the company of experienced guides, to see capuchin monkeys, howlers, uakaris, squirrel monkeys, three toed sloths and hoatzin birds among many other species.
- Traditional harpoon fishing where, depending on how dedicated you are, you can expect to catch a variety of fish. These include tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum), surubim (Pseudoplaystoma fasciatum) and tucunaré (Cichla ocellaris), which are now caught particularly during the dry season.
- Trip to visit a local riverine village in order to interact and get to know the Amazonian population and way of life.
- Paddling trips in dugout canoes where you will see a rich variety of birdlife and fauna.
- Lake Mamiraua Trip – by motorized canoe to a beautiful lake inside the Reserve, where you will have an opportunity to see a plethora of birds, monkeys, pink dolphins, black caiman and perhaps the pirarucu fish. You will stay at the Lake until sunset and on your way back you will spot nocturnal fauna.
The researchers at the Institute will be pleased to give you a presentation of their work on the marine life they are studying at the Reserve, for you to understand a little more what you have been privileged to be a part of and contributed to by visiting the Uakari Lodge and the Mamiraua Institute.
