Peru and Bolivia Package #1 - (14D/13N)

Day 1 Friday

Arrival Lima. Transfer from airport to hotel.

 

Day 2 Saturday

Visit Lima, the capital of Peru, founded in 1535 by the Spanish ‘Conquistador’ Pizarro. The city replaced Cusco as capital and soon became the richest settlement of Spain in the New World. Today Lima is a metropolis of over eight and a half million inhabitants. In the center you can find various interesting sights, like the catacombs of the San Francisco Church and the Plaza de Armas.

 

Day 3 Sunday

Flight to Cusco and visit to the city. Once Cusco formed the heart of the Inca Empire, later to be conquered by the Spanish. They destroyed the city and used the foundations of the Inca constructions to build a new colonial city. Around Cusco, in the Sacred Valley of the Inca’s you can still find many impressive Inca ruins, such as Sacsayhuaman and Ollantaytambo. Nowadays Cusco is a beautiful colonial city, where ancient spirits still tell their colorful tales.

 

Day 4 Monday

Tour the Sacred Valley of the Incas. The valley is situated in a beautiful area. You pass small andean villages, visit colorful markets, the impressive Inca Ruin of Ollantaytambo and finally Chinchero. Stay the night in a beautiful hacienda in the valley.

 

Days 5 and 6 Tuesday-Wednesday

Machu Picchu: A short transfer takes you to Ollanta for a beautiful one-hour train ride to Aguas Calientes. From here you can visit the impressive ruins of Machu Picchu. You will make a guided tour of the ruins in the afternoon. The best time for taking pictures of Machu Picchu is early in the morning, as at this time there are few visitors. When you climb Inti Punku (sun gate) at this early stage of the day you will be able to see how Machu Picchu awakens below you, as the mist above the ruins slowly dissolves. Archeologists presume that once Machu Picchu was a religious center, but the exact meaning of the city remains a mystery.

 

Day 7 Thursday

Cusco at your convenience.

 

Day 8 Friday

Cusco-Puno transfer. Puno is a lively traditional town on the banks of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world. Sailing over Lake Titicaca you can visit the floating reed islands of Uros and the traditional island of Taquile.

 

Day 9 Saturday

Today you will tour the Titicaca Lake. Visit to the famous Uros Islands, plateaus made of layers and layers of totra reed, on which the Uros Indians live until today. Later on you visit the traditional Island of Taquile, where you can make a beautiful hike. South of Puno you finally come ashore and then return overland to the city. On the way you make a short stop in the Chuquito Settlement, before returning to your hotel.


Days 10 and 11 Sunday-Monday

Hydrofoil tour to Bolivia. Beautiful 2-day tour, visiting the Bolivian side of the lake. Customs affairs will be arranged on-board. Copacabana and the Island of the Sun are amongst the highlights of this spectacular day.
Days 12 and 13 Tuesday-Wednesday

La Paz and surroundings. Visits to the City of La Paz and the surreal surroundings of the Valley of the Moon. Time to visit the highest ski area in the world, Chacaltaya, or to stroll along the picturesque cobble stoned streets of ancient La Paz.

 

Day 14 Thursday

Flight back to Lima for extension programs (on request) or connection to Europe.
